FEELING SALTY?
Bath season is upon us here in the Northern Hemisphere as our temperatures are cooling down, although I have to say it is always bath season for me. I attribute much of my vitality and glowing skin to being a bath taker. Having used my Body Soak Line for many years now, I have experienced excellent benefits in my overall well-being and healthy condition of my skin. I thought I’d share a frequently asked question I get about my Sea Salt Body Soak Line with you, “Are these Epsom Salts?”
I am often asked if the salt I use in my Body Soaks is Epsom Salts as it is a common remedy recommended by physicians and therapists to use in a bath to help relieve sore muscles and joints. My answer is, ” No.” Epsom Salts is Magnesium sulfate which is an isolated mineral extracted from Sea Salt. Can you tell which salt is Epsom Salts and which is the salt we use in our Sea Salt Body Soak Line in the image I took? I’d like to point out the visible differences with the two salts pictured. The salt on the left is Epsom Salts. If you look closely you will notice that many of the grains are similar in form and shape, and the salt looks powdery. The manufactured shaped of the Epsom Salt crystals is an indication that it is processed and formed this way. The salt on the right is an unrefined, therapeutic grade Sea Salt that we use in our Body Soak Line. It is whole in form and processed only for verification of purity without being altered from its natural state. If you look closely you will notice none of the crystals are the same shape. The Sea Salt on the right looks unprocessed and translucent, whereas the Epsom Salts on the left is bright white and refined looking.
Now on to the directions. The recommended amount to use on the directions for Epsom Salts is 2 cups per bath. The Sea Salt in our Body Soak Line directions calls for 2 ounces per bath in a normal size tub. That is a huge difference in the quantity recommended for a bath. You will also notice a difference in the cost of Epsom Salts versus products containing unrefined therapeutic grade Sea Salt. The reason for this is Epsom Salts is just one mineral, Magnesium sulfate which is highly known for its many health benefits in the body and helping to reduce stress, yet, the unrefined Sea Salt in our Body Soak Line contains many other minerals and trace minerals that are nutritious and beneficial for the skin and body on a holistic level. We benefit much greater nutritionally when we use health and beauty products that contain unprocessed and unrefined ingredients.
Here are some important nutritional facts about several minerals and trace minerals found in our Sea Salt Body Soak Line and why I recommend using therapeutic grade Sea Salt for your bath that is unrefined:
Calcium: This vital nutrient is the most abundant mineral in our body. It is deposited in the bones and teeth and is essential for healthy blood and to regulate the heartbeat. The first signs of calcium deficiency are nervous affliction, causing muscle cramps, joint pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and legs. Calcium is an inefficient mineral to absorb and relies heavily on the presence of vitamin D in the body. The greater the need, the better absorption in the body. Coincidentally, calcium needs acid in the body for proper assimilation and so it dissolves better when there is a need for it.
Copper: A trace mineral found in all body tissue. It is involved in protein metabolism and aids in all healing processes. It helps the body oxidize vitamin C and is absorbed in the stomach and upper intestine. It is stored in the tissue of the liver, kidneys, heart and brain.
Magnesium: An essential mineral that supports bone and heart health, anxiety and nervous system disorders, and promotes the healing of skin tissue. It is necessary for cell metabolism, and promotes the absorption and metabolism of other minerals, such as, calcium, phosphorus, sodium and potassium. It is absorbed in the small intestine and excreted through the kidneys with the aid of the adrenal gland.
Potassium: This important mineral helps regulates water balance within the body, aiding in the distribution of fluids and nourishment of the cell walls. Potassium also regulates the nervous system and elimination of poisonous waste in the body through secretion of the kidneys. It works with Sodium to help normalize the heartbeat and nourish the muscular system. It is rapidly absorbed from the small intestine and mainly excreted through urination and perspiration.
Sodium: A vital nutrient that helps regulate water retention alongside Potassium. It is an important mineral in keeping other blood minerals soluble. It is absorbed in the small intestine and stomach and carried by the blood to the kidneys which it is then filtered out and returned to the blood in the amounts needed to maintain blood levels required by the body. It is detoxifying agent and helps purge carbon dioxide from the body and helps cells retain nourishment and expel waste. It also relieves stiffness and muscle cramps.
Sulfur: A “beauty” mineral that is found in every cell in the body. It has an important relationship with protein. It supports hair, nail and skin rejuvenation. It is a vital nutrient for bone health and skin disorders. It works with the liver to secrete bile and helps the body maintain balance. It is stored in every cell in the body particularly in the joints, hair, skin and nails. Excess sulfur is excreted in the urine and feces.
Zinc: An essential trace mineral that is found in larger amounts than any other trace mineral in the body. It is important for wound and burn healing, and when applied topically, it is known to protect the skin against sunburn and windburn. Also known to boost the immune system, internally it is a key factor in enzymatic regulation of cell proliferation. It is absorbed in the upper small intestine and is excreted through the gastrointestinal tract. The largest storage of zinc occurs in the liver, pancreas, kidney, bones and voluntary muscles. It is a component of insulin and is part of the enzyme needed to break down alcohol. It is essential for general growth and proper development of the reproductive organs and for normal function of the prostate gland.
